On the first lap of the season-opening 1996 Grand Prix of Australia — the first in more than 40 years at Melbourne’s Albert Park and the first to utilize a new race-start procedure, still employed in Formula 1, replacing the old red-to-green light protocol — Jordan’s Martin Brundle had a spectacular barrel roll into the sand trap at turn 3, where the car fantastically broke in two.

Ralf Schumacher discovered he needed vision correction following a road car accident before the 2002 Formula One season. After the start of the 2002 Australian Grand Prix, one may have wondered if Ralf had been driving with contact lenses or not.
