FIA Calls Emergency Tire Meeting

Jean Todt has told Pirelli to be at a meeting of the Sporting Working Group this week, in order to take measures to avoid a repeat of the tire failures that were experienced at Silverstone. Pirelli has been asked to propose a solution. The FIA’s priority is, obviously, driver safety, and a suitable solution is deemed to be needed as soon as possible.

While Pirelli’s motorsport chief Paul Hembery suggested the problems represented a “new” issue for the tire company, he refused to speculate on their cause before in-house analysis had been completed.

“Obviously today wasn’t foreseen — we’ve seen something new, a different type of problem,” he told reporters. “We’re currently performing our analysis. We’ve got to go away and understand what’s happened. When we’ve got the facts we can understand what’s happened and get to the core of the issue. We take these things seriously and when we have the answers we’ll let you know.”
