Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg held off Red Bull’s Mark Webber to win a dramatic British Grand Prix overshadowed by a series of as-yet unexplained Pirelli tire failures. In a race featuring two safety car interventions and huge tire explosions on five cars, Red Bull’s championship leader Sebastian Vettel retired from the lead. His rival Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso fought up to third from ninth.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton dropped to last with tire failure, but fought to fourth ahead of Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen. Alonso’s third-place finish, combined with Vettel’s retirement with a total gearbox failure, cut the German’s advantage in the World Championship to 21 points.
