Ralf Schumacher Airborne

Australia 02
Ralf Schumacher discovered he needed vision correction following a road car accident before the 2002 Formula One season. After the start of the 2002 Australian Grand Prix, one may have wondered if Ralf had been driving with contact lenses or not. Ralf had made a fast getaway and was closing down on Rubens Barrichello into the first corner. But the German was traveling way too fast to make the corner on a clear track, let alone fighting for position, and piled into the back of the Ferrari, launching his Williams in to the air. Back in the pits Ralf was livid over incident, saying “I felt like a passenger on an aeroplane and I was really lucky because I ran off in the right area and didn’t trip around.” The reality was that Schumacher made a misjudgment and subsequent investigation cleared Barrichello of any blame, the race stewards deciding that Rubens had moved legitimately to defend his line and then again to take the corner.

This accident ranked an honorable mention in F1A&G’s new “Top Sixes” feature collection.
